And Vito Makes Six
July 29, 2006 -- With our 7
year old Great Dane only two weeks out of surgery from a
life-threatening case of bloat, and an ancient 15 year old Dalmatian to
care for, the last thing we needed was another guide dog puppy.
But who could say no to this face? Well, certainly not us.
Meet Vito... an adorable five month old Labrador Retriever, and the
newest member of the Atherton six-pack.
Vito is what Guide Dogs of America
calls a "re-home" -- a dog that, for some reason or another, is moved
from one puppy raiser family to another. Generally speaking,
re-homes tend to be troublemakers needing a second chance, or maybe a
little extra discipline and structure. (We've certainly had our
share of those!) However, this is not the case with Vito.
Vito's first family had to give him up when they moved out of the area
with an employment change. Needless to say, they were very sad to
have to leave him behind. But don't worry, Leslie, your boy is in
good hands. And, as you can see from the photo below, Vito is
having no problems adjusting to his new life.
Is
six large hair machines too many? Yeah, but who cares. As
long as there's room for another dog bed in the master, it's all good.
Besides, this puppy came already housebroken and crate trained, so what
trouble could he be? Well, OK, so we might have to work a little
on the counter surfing, toilet drinking and trash diving, but nobody's
perfect. Welcome little yellow dog... we like you already.
September, 2006
-- In September, our handsome yellow puppy (now 7 months old) was
pushed into training overload with a week-long trip to Las Vegas.
Bill and I attended Super Zoo, a pet industry convention, where Canine
Creek received the 2006/2007 Retailer of the Year award from Pet Product
News International. During the course of a week, Vito stayed in
two hotels, trolled the strip for showgirls, attended pet industry
seminars, went to fancy dinners with vendors, and worked the trade show
floor at the Mandalay Bay convention center. Needless to say, the
excitement was a bit stressful and tiring, but Vito took it all in
stride. People were amazed that a teenage Lab had such good
manners. Vito was a wonderful representative of GDA's puppy
program, and we were quite proud of his ability to handle all that was
thrown at him.
