Home Needed ASAP for Dog
(Nov 2007)
Following is
an email from a family in Santa Clarita. If you can take this dog,
please contact the owners, Stacey & Ben, at the email listed below.
"It
is with a heavy heart that I write this. We are looking for a home that
doesn't have small children or small dogs for my male Shepard mix. On
Wednesday night, he attacked my male min pin, by grabbing him by the
neck, shaking him three times and throwing him across the room. (think
of a coyote attack!) I immediately rushed him to the vet, where I was
told that he would be ok. His leather collar saved his life. His bites
to the neck missed his jugular vein by less than 1cm. He would have bled
out if it hit his vein. The collar kept the teeth from going in deeper.
The attack was unprovoked, it wasn't over food or anything else. We are
keeping them separated from each other. He has tried to attack him
again.
My husband and I have three small
children ages 15mths, 3, and 6 years old. My husband has said that he
fears for the safety of our children, since his behavior has been
unpredictable for awhile. Our vet agreed with us that a new home would
be best. We would love to find him a new home. I refuse to take him to a
shelter. He is a great watch dog, is house and crate trained. He does
get along with other dogs, just not small dogs anymore. We live in Santa
Clarita, California, if you know of anyone who lives in CA and would be
willing to give him a home please email me. It breaks my heart to have
to do this, but the safety of my family has to come first. If anyone can
help us find him a home please email me at
traskpack@sbcglobal.net.
Thanks, Stacey"
Holiday Presents for Pets (Nov 2007)
Canine Creek collects new and used pet items for local rescues.
Please don't throw away pet items or household linens you no longer
want... put them to good use. Foster homes and
private
shelters need supplies, and are happy to
accept donations of food and treats, gently-used dog collars, pet
dishes, bedding, dog clothing/sweaters, towels and blankets, dog houses,
crates, etc.
If
you have items you'd like to donate, please bring them to Canine Creek,
sealed in plastic bags or boxes, during business hours (10am to 6pm, 7
days a week). We will send them to the pet rescues who need them most.
If you'd prefer to make a tax deductible
cash donation, we also have a Humane Society drop box at the store.
Thank you for remembering Tehachapi's homeless pets this holiday season..

Husky Puppies Need a Home (Oct 21st)

full-time care, although they are on soft puppy food. Homes needed ASAP!
Call (661) 972-5990 if you can help.
UPDATE 10/28/07: Three of
the six puppies have found homes, but three still need families.

or call 800-471-5822.
Animal Abandonment in Tehachapi (Oct 10th)
Yet again, some
unscrupulous person (or persons) have seen fit to abandon helpless animals
in Tehachapi, tying them on the doorstep of the local vet hospital.
This morning, when hospital employees arrived for work, there were two
dogs tied to the front post... abandoned by their owners. These dogs need
a foster
home
IMMEDIATELY, or they will be sent to the Mojave animal shelter to be put
down. One is a young female Pitt Bull, and the other is a black male Corgi
type dog. If anyone is able to help these dogs, please call The
Tehachapi Vet Hospital at (661) 822-6731. And, if anyone knows who
abandoned them, please call the police department and report it.
Canine
Creek is taking a stand against the illegal animal dumping, neglect
and hoarding that is occurring in our area at an alarming rate.
Tehachapi is a growing city, and we NEED a local animal shelter!
We insist that the Tehachapi City
Manager and Kern County Board of Supervisors take this issue seriously,
and make solving it a priority. Please stop by Canine Creek and sign
our Animal Shelter Petition today. If
you would like blank copies of our petition form to help us acquire Kern
resident signatures,
send us a email
and we'll
forward it to you.
Dog Park Update (Oct 5th)

we do. Previous customer service, retail or pet industry experience
helpful, but not required. If you are dependable, honest,
self-motivated and have a positive can-do attitude, you might be just the
person we're looking for. Part-time or full-time scheduling, but
must be willing to work weekends. Interested? Bring a resume to Canine Creek between 10am and 6pm.
We're open 7 days a week.
Basic
Obedience Classes Starting Soon (Sept 25th)
Our fantastic trainer, Janice
Gantenbein, will be back for another round of basic obedience classes at
Canine Creek, starting on Tuesday, September 25th. Janice's pet
industry experience includes zookeeper, L.A. Animal Control, and movie
studio animal trainer. Janice teaches animal handling to private
individuals, 4-H and other groups, believing that "living with your dog
obedience" is essential in integrating a pet into the family.
The price will be $100 for the 8 week
basic obedience course. Non-aggressive dogs (all breeds) and
puppies over 4 months, with current vaccines, are welcome to attend. The
topics covered will be those essential for a happy home life with your
pet, including sit, stay, down, proper leash etiquette, communication
techniques, and problem solving. The first session will be with
owners only - no dogs attending the first class, please.
CLASSES ARE ALMOST FULL,
so please contact us quickly if you'd like to attend. There will
be two sessions -- one starting at 5:30pm, and the second one at 6:30pm.

the new shop, and plan to have a grand re-opening so we can celebrate it
together. Stay tuned for relocation updates.

their various rescue, adoption and spay/neuter programs. Got a
dirty dog? Come wash your dog on September 23rd and help our
local homeless pets at the same time. It's a win-win!

Kittens Left to Die
in Hot Car (Aug 25th)
Yesterday a very nice young
lady came into Canine Creek looking for help. Apparently, while she was
shopping in Albertson's on Saturday, someone left a cardboard box with
four very tiny kittens in her car. They were only a few weeks old,
barely had their eyes open, were dirty, dehydrated, and obviously in
distress. We took in the kittens, tried to eye drop water into them,
and immediately started making phone calls. Fortunately, the very nice
folks at A+Pets had a nursing momma cat, and they offered to take the
homeless kittens. Within an hour, they called to tell us the mom cat
was nursing her "new" babies.
It was nearly 90 degrees yesterday.
Leaving infant, nursing kittens in a closed car would have been a death
sentence in a very short time, had the owner of the car not returned
soon enough. To whomever committed this crime of animal cruelty...
shame on you! Even if you can't keep an animal, there are ALWAYS
options to abandoning them, especially to die a slow, painful death by
heat exhaustion.
Tehachapi is long overdue for a
full-time staffed animal shelter. It's time for our residents to take a
stand and demand that our government (city or county) move forward with
providing facilities for our local homeless pets. Enough is enough!!
Tehachapi Farmer's Market - Starting May 31st
If you're out and about town
this summer, look for the Canine Creek booth at the Farmers’ Market and
More!, which will take place Thursday afternoons, from 4 PM to 7 PM, in
downtown Tehachapi at Railroad Park, through the end of August. We
will be showcasing some of our favorite organic and natural products,
and passing out complimentary pet food samples.
Besides the fabulous fresh produce, there
are a variety of arts and crafts, candles, baked goods, food,
gourmet coffee, and home décor items. There will also be
live music each week. So, mark you calendar for the months of June,
July, and August. Join the fun at Farmers’ Market and More.

Concerned about the pet food recall?
(Apr 2007)
With over 100 dog and cat
foods on the FDA recall list, it's hard to figure out what's safe
and healthy for our pets. Canine Creek has been flooded with
questions from concerned dog and cat owners in recent weeks, and we are
working very hard to stay informed on all issues pertaining to the recall.
Here is what we know:
To date, none of the foods we sell
have made the recall list.
Canine Creek sells only super premium
dry and canned foods recommended by the
Whole
Dog Journal, a natural guide to pet care. Yes,
these foods cost a bit more, but this recall is proof that quality
ingredients DO matter. Here is a list of the brands we currently
stock:
Super Premium Dog Foods:
Wellness,
Innova,
California Natural,
Canidae,
Natural Balance**,
Solid
Gold,
Chicken Soup**,
Evo, and
Merrick
Super Premium Cat Foods:
Felidae,
Evo,
Wellness,
Innova,
Chicken Soup**,
Merrick and Tiki Cat
** IMPORTANT NOTE:
Natural Balance VENISON and VEGETARIAN dry formulas (dog and cat),
and 4 varieties of CANNED have been recalled due to a suspected contamination in the "rice
protein concentrate". According to the
Natural
Balance website, NO other Natural Balance products are affected.
Canine Creek does NOT sell any Natural Balance Venison, Vegetarian or
canned products.
On April 26, 2007,
Chicken Soup
voluntarily recalled CANNED PUPPY and CANNED KITTEN
products as a precautionary measure, as they contain rice protein
concentrate, although there have been no specific quality or safety
issues. According to their website,
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul
dry pet food and dog treats ARE NOT part of any food or treat
recall. Canine Creek does not sell any Chicken Soup Puppy or
Kitten canned products.
WHAT'S STILL SAFE?
Canine Creek stocks a complete line of
healthy, natural and organic food and treats. Please don't hesitate to stop
by if you have questions, need product brochures, or would
like to try some free samples. We are open 7 days a week, and are
happy to answer your questions.
For a complete list of recalled pet
foods,
visit the FDA website.
MORE INFO: For a summary of foods by manufacturer including where,
how and by whom their products are made, see

Food List.
Fundraising for Dobie SOS a success! (Apr
2007)
Thank you to all the vendors,
customers and volunteers who
helped make the Canine Creek Birthday Bash & Charity Fundraiser
a
success on April 1st. Our one day event raised nearly $2,000 for
the Doberman SOS
rescue of Tehachapi. A special THANK YOU to Christina Loren of
KERO TV for helping to promote our fundraiser on the Bakersfield ABC
morning news. To see a recap of our event, check out the
Birthday Bash page.
Supporting our Troops (March 26, 2007)
Like many other families
across America, Tehachapi resident Karen Campbell has a son serving our
country in Iraq. To show support for the troops, Karen has started
a movement called "Because We Care", where she is asking for community
involvement in sending care packages to the front lines. Canine
Creek is the official "drop zone" in Tehachapi for the Because We Care
donations. For more information on this story, and to see how you
can help, visit the ABC
KERO TV
Bakersfield website, or call Karen at (661) 821-6038.
Welcome, Baby Taylor (March 22, 2007)
Canine Creek is thrilled to
announce the birth of baby Taylor Gustin, daughter to our staff member
Jessica and her husband Ken, and big brother Nik. Isn't she
adorable? Baby Taylor should get lots of spoiling, as she has
several Aunties at the shop to look out for her. Congratulations
Gustin family.
Canine Creek.... not just a store for dogs (Jan
07)
Although we are, by design, a
store primarily for dogs, it's obvious that we have morphed a bit since 2004.
We are still about 95% dog
related, but we do try to help anyone who walks in the door
with
a pet related problem or need. In the past few months we've had bunnies in for baths, cats in for
harness fittings, parrots visit the shot clinic, special ordered horse
feed, and, most recently, sold a jacket to a cold little piggy named
Molly. Due to space limitations, we can't be a full service pet
store, but we may be able to help with some of your non-dog special
order needs. Feel free to ask the staff when you visit. Even
if we can't help, we might know who to send you to, as several of our
employees have plenty of farm and ranch animal experience. Doesn't
Molly look blissfully happy in her new jacket from Canine Creek?
ZZZZZZZZ

New Year, New Look for Canine Creek (Jan 07)
With a new year came a new
look, and some exciting developments at Tehachapi's favorite dog shop.
After several months of preparation, we unveiled our new computerized
Point-of-Sale system, which will help us better track customer's special
orders, anticipate inventory needs, and provide faster, error-free
service at check out.
If you haven't been in the shop for a
while, you'll also notice a more spacious entry way, and that our
facilities layout has changed a bit. The check-out counter has
been relocated to the front of the store, the grooming tables are now
more convenient to the wash area, and we even managed to carve out a
tiny office area for our hard-working management team.
There is a bit of a learning curve for
the staff with these changes, but we are coming up to speed quickly, and
look forward serving you better in 2007 with this new technology.
